The first NBA playoffs were held in 1947, two years before the NBA was officially formed through the merger of the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and the National Basketball League (NBL). In 1947, the BAA consisted of 8 teams, and the top four teams advanced to the playoffs. The Philadelphia Warriors, New York Knicks, Washington Capitols, and Chicago Stags were the first four teams to compete in the NBA playoffs. The Warriors went on to win the championship that year, defeating the Stags in the finals.
